Below are the details of the 2011 Conference.

COMMIT-TED has organized a Free informational event for parents and caregivers of children with Type I
diabetes.
For the Type I diabetes community, this is an opportunity to connect with other families, and learn
more about current issues and technology available to your child. This program is designed for adults and teens only,
to provide optimum learning and interaction without distraction.
A General Session will include a status update on the recently passed legislation affecting our children in
school, and a technology update. Breakout sessions will be led by volunteers from local hospital clinics and other dedicated
professionals.

1. Suzanne Elder - The Care of Students
With Diabetes Act - A Status Update on the new law passed in Illinois last December.
Suzanne Elder consults with advocates, agencies, and legislators
throughout the country and has earned a reputation for providing reliable, high-quality information and support services to
parents, schools, health care providers and other stakeholders. She has organized thousands of people throughout
the state, negotiated more than 200 Section 504 plans, and drafted the law that now safeguards the health and education rights
of students with diabetes in Illinois.

2. Gary Gilles - Technology Update for Type I Diabetes
Gary Gilles is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in private practice
in Palatine, IL. He has maintained a clinical practice since 1987 and has worked extensively with issues pertaining to
chronic disease, including diabetes. For four years he worked as a diabetes counselor at Holy Family Medical Center in Des
Plaines, IL in their inpatient/outpatient program. Since 2008 he has served as the Guide at About.com for type 1 diabetes
and continually creates new content and a weekly blog on issues related to type 1. Gary is married and has three children.
His son, now 21, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 9 months of age. In addition to his clinical work he teaches
a variety of psychology courses in an adjunct capacity at Trinity International University and Argosy University. He is the
former editor of Chicago Caregiver magazine and frequently writes for other publications.

3. John Henry - MyCare Connect - Using technology to keep all of your child's caregivers on the same
page.
John Henry has over 20 years experience in the Information Technology industry, primarily as a business consultant. John’s
connection to diabetes dates back to his childhood when his best friend was diagnosed with type-1 diabetes in 1969. Then,
in 2003, his daughter Sarah was diagnosed and became John’s inspiration to help people with diabetes better manage the
disease. John and his family are active fundraisers for their local ADA and JDRF chapters, being awarded numerous awards as
diabetes advocates and fundraisers.

Breakout Sessions - Importantly, you want to obtain information that is key to your current situation.
Not all families are at the same point in dealing with their child's diabetes. Newly diagnosed families want to learn about
the basics, while those with more experience want to learn about advanced concepts. Therefore, concurrent sessions will
be available for you to select the topic most appealing to your current situation.

- Preparing your child for college - a panel discussion presented by the American
Diabetes Association and The Skinner Family. (An excellent choice for any family having a child in high school.)
- Type I Internet Resources - presented by Gary Gilles, a guide to finding information
and support for your Type I child and family.
- The Care Act Q and A Session - Ask Suzanne Elder your questions.
- Insulin Pumps 101 - a general overview of insulin pumps; how they work and potential
benefits. This presentation will also include time to talk to on site pump companies and look at their insulin pumps.
- Continuous Glucose Monitors 101 - a general overview of CGM technology, and
an up-close look at sensors on the market.
- Managing Blood Sugars As You Grow - discusses the special challenges that
occur during growth and development of children into adolescents and teenagers. Problem-solving strategies of fluctuating
blood sugars will be described.
- Ketones - the importance of knowing when to test and what to do.
- Nutrition and Celiac - how it relates to Type I and how to manage this
disease.
- Exercise and Diabetes Management - Learn the basics of exercise physiology and
how to gain better control of type 1 management during sports, exercise, and general physical activity. A variety of
strategies for blood glucose regulation during exercise will be discussed, which will give kids, parents, and coaches practical
tips to be shared with health care providers to allow kids with type 1 to perform at their peak fitness with confidence.
